Raleigh man charged with DWI after going airborne, hitting tree

Burton Smisson, 33, was driving 80 mph in a 45 mph zone when he lost control on a curve, hit a ditch, went airborne about 32 feet and hit a tree, troopers said.

RALEIGH, N.C. — Authorities charged a Raleigh man with DWI and careless and reckless driving after he crashed a 2004 Nissan Pathfinder on Pinecrest Road early Thursday.

Burton Smisson, 33, was driving 80 mph in a 45 mph zone when he lost control on a curve, hit a ditch, went airborne about 32 feet and hit a tree, troopers said.

The crash happened around 3:15 a.m., and the vehicle's roof was pretty much cut off, authorities said.

Smisson was in stable condition at WakeMed and was expected to survive, according to troopers.
