Raleigh firefighters battle townhouse blaze
Two Raleigh townhomes were damaged by fire and smoke Monday afternoon.
Posted — UpdatedInvestigators have yet to determine the cause of the fire, but they say it started in a recycling bin sitting next to a two-story townhouse at 3409 Baton Road and spread to the unit's vinyl siding and extended into the attic.
A nanny and two children were home at the time but they were able to escape uninjured. Landscapers working nearby saw smoke and notified them of the fire.
"(I) saw smoke coming up so we noticed to check on the side of the building," said Christopher Collins with Pipeline Irrigation. "(I) saw flames coming up and instantly (started) banging on doors and getting all the residents out."
Firefighters were able to get the fire under control before it spread to the second townhouse, authorities said, but the second home sustained smoke damage.
