RALEIGH, N.C. — The City Council voted unanimously Tuesday on a developer to build a hotel across the street from the downtown Raleigh Convention Center.

Raleigh-based Summit Hospitality Group Ltd. will build an 11-story Residence Inn by Marriott on a vacant half-acre lot owned by the city at the corner of Salisbury and Lenoir streets. The hotel is expected to have 140 to 154 rooms, retail space on the first floor, a rooftop terrace and parking in a nearby municipal deck and could open in two years.

City officials and the Downtown Raleigh Alliance business group pushed for a hotel on the site to allow the Convention Center to host larger conferences and shows.

If the city cannot negotiate an agreement with Summit, officials said, they would try to work a deal with another Raleigh developer interested in building a hotel there.
