City officials have put a plan to pump water from Lake Benson to the Neuse River on hold indefinitely.

RALEIGH, N.C. — City officials have put a plan to pump water from Lake Benson to the Neuse River on hold indefinitely.

The project involved drawing water from Lake Benson and its feeder Lake Wheeler through a new pump station and 10 miles of unused sewer line and pumping it into the Neuse River. The move would have allowed the Army Corps of Engineers to slow the flow of water to the river from Falls Lake, conserving Raleigh's dwindling drinking water supply.

Raleigh Public Utilities Director Dale Crisp said rain from two weeks ago created a greater flow in the river than expected, which makes the extra pumping unnecessary for the time being.
