RALEIGH, N.C. — The state Department of Revenue announced Thursday that agents arrested a Raleigh couple on felony tax charges.

Thomas M. Jones Jr., 62, and Diane S. Jones, 63, both of 6112 River Meadow Court, were charged with three counts of attempting to evade or defeat tax.

According to arrest warrants, between 2004 and 2008, Thomas Jones and Diane Jones each allegedly filed three separate returns claiming they had no taxable income when, investigators claim, they did.

"The returns filed by the Joneses attempted to deceive the Department of Revenue and attempted to cause the state to issue tax refunds greater than they were entitled to receive," authorities said in a news release.

The couple is out of jail, each on a $9,000 bond.
