RALEIGH, N.C. — City Councilwoman Mary-Ann Baldwin is using campaign funds to go on a trip to China sponsored by the Greater Raleigh Chamber of Commerce.

Baldwin reported a nearly $1,800 charge on her campaign finance report to pay for the trip. A spokesman said the nine-day tour is a permissible campaign expense for a council member.

The chamber is taking about 300 people on sightseeing tours of China in October and November. Chamber President Harvey Schmitt said the trips will provide a better understanding of China's culture and economy.

City Councilwoman Nancy McFarlane is also going on the trip but didn't charge the expense to her campaign.
