RALEIGH, N.C. — The Raleigh City Council gave the go-ahead Monday for a canoe launch, river walk, and playground and picnic shelters on 146 acres of open land in Northeast Raleigh.
While many agreed Horseshoe Farm Park should be used for recreation, dispute has raged over what extent that use would be.
The council didn’t agree to a controversial community center with a gym and two basketball courts. Opponents say it would have ruined the beauty of the area.
The council did approve a 40,000 square foot community center in another area of North Raleigh next to Durant Nature Park, at a cost of $9 million.
That money is part of a $88.6 million park bond that council members agreed to put on the ballot this fall. That bond includes the funding of a greenway that would stretch along the Neuse River from Falls Lake Dam to the Johnston County line.
