Raleigh businesses clean up after sprinkler system malfunction

Nearly 4,500 gallons rained down on Aaron's, a rent-to-own store, at 3514 Capital Boulevard Saturday night. The water forced neighboring businesses to close, including Edward McKay Used Books & More.

"We came in and found that there has been some significant water coming through the wall into our store," said Rick Dales, the bookstore’s assistant manager.

City officials turned off the block's water supply to prevent further water damage.

Bookstore regulars were disappointed by the store’s temporary closing.

"I am so sad to see it closed," Rebecca Hargraves said. "I come every once in a while. My dad comes way more often than I do looking for books for him to read. He buys the kids new books and my first thought was, 'oh no, are they going to have a lot of damage to the books.'"

While no books were damaged, the closure is impacting the store’s bottom line, Dales said.

"We have gotten a lot of calls from customers who are very sympathetic to the plight," he said. "We are working to get it reopened as fast as possible."
