The N.C. Museum of Art has put one regular summer program for kids on hiatus, but has added two more to its calendar.

The N.C. Museum of Art usually features a weekday summer movie series that showcases family-friendly animated and live action shorts from around the world.
I love the series because my kids and I have gotten to see some amazing films on a big screen that we wouldn't have even known existed. Sadly, the series is on hiatus this year as the west Raleigh museum renovates and makes a technical upgrade to its auditorium. (This, of course, does not include the museum's very popular outdoor movie series, which continues as scheduled!).

In its place, the museum is offering some other programs for all ages, along with a new storytime series that launches this weekend and will continue into the fall.

Here's what's on tap:

Pop-Up Art in the Pavilion
Noon to 3 p.m., select Wednesdays and Sundays (June 21, July 8 and July 19, Aug. 12 and Aug. 16), in the Lowe's Pavilion in the Museum Park.

Stop by for family-friendly art-making activities and adventures inspired by the Museum Park (weather permitting). Call (919) 715-5923 if inclement weather is forecast. The program is designed for all ages. Kids must be with an adult.

Summer Story Time
1 p.m. to 1:30 p.m., June 20, July 18 and Aug. 15, at the West Building Information Desk.

Meet fantastic characters and take artful adventures as we read a selection of picture books inspired by works of art in the collection. Designed for families with kids ages 4 to 6. Kids must be with an adult. It's free, but a ticket is required. Here are the books and pieces that will be featured this summer:

  • June 20: Book: Sky Color by Peter H. Reynolds; Works of art: John Beerman, Three Trees, Two Clouds; Georgia O'Keefe, Cebolla Church
  • July 18: Book: Peanut Butter and Cupcake by Terry Border; Works of art: Sir William Beechey, The Oddie Children; John Singleton Copley, Sir William Pepperrell and His Family
  • Aug. 15: Book: Duck on a Bike by David Shannon; Work of art: Jean-Baptiste Oudry, Swan Attacked by a Dog
Also planned this summer at the museum is a family campout and movie.
