Quail Ridge recommends books for all the February holidays
Black History Month, Valentine's Day, President's Day. Quail Ridge Books & Music offers its picks for kids.

There's a lot to celebrate in February - Black History Month, Valentine's Day and Presidents' Day. Quail Ridge Books & Music is showcasing books at its store in Raleigh this month to help kids mark each of these celebrations.
Here's what the store's great children's staff recommends:
Black History Month: Carole Weatherford's Freedom on the Menu (Penguin $16.99/$5.99, ages 5 and up) and Andrea and Brian Pinkney's Sit-In (Hachette $16.99, grades 3 to 6) both address the famous Greensboro lunch counter sit in, but in different styles.
Valentine's Day:
- Jacqueline Ogburn's Little Treasures (Houghton Mifflin $16.99), illustrated by Caldecott Medal winner Chris Raschka, is a lovely collection of endearments from around the world. For ages 4 and up.
- An Eve Bunting-Jan Brett collaboration, The Valentine Bears (Clarion $5.95). No one should miss Valentine's Day, even if hibernating! For ages 4 and up.
- Patrick McDonnell (of Mutts comic strip fame) brings us Hug Time (Little Brown $6.99, board), in which kitty Jules travels the world to deliver love, to find the most important hug at home. For ages 1 and up.
President's Day
- Mary Pope Osborne's Magic Tree House goes back to the time of Lincoln in fact: Fact Tracker: Abraham Lincoln (Random House $5.99). For ages 6 and up.
- Then there's Osborne's fiction book Abe Lincoln At Last! (Random House $12.99). For ages 6 and up.
- Nick Bruel's Bad Kitty for President (Macmillan $13.99) explains the election process. For ages 6 and up.
Quail Ridge also has some upcoming events for kids too. Here is what's on the schedule, along with Quail Ridge staff's reviews:
- 7 p.m., Feb. 23. Humor, emotion, relationships, family drama – Jordan Sonnenblick balances these perfectly in his books, and the new Curveball: The Year I Lost My Grip (Scholastic $17.99) is no exception. One trait of Jordan's that we enjoy is how he works characters from one book into the background of others. Check out Zen & the Art of Faking It, and you'll find San Lee returning in a minor role in Curveball. Call to reserve your copy early. Ages 11 and up.
- 4:30 p.m., April 16. Erin Hunter returns with the latest in the incredibly popular Warriors series, Omen of the Stars #6: The Last Hope. Check out the final adventure in the Omen story sequence. For ages 9-12. Receive a ticket to meet the author with the purchase of The Last Hope from Quail Ridge. It comes out April 1 (no joke). But if you pre-purchase it, you'll receive an earlier line ticket.
- 4:30 p.m., May 1. Author I.C. Springman and illustrator Brian Lies (Bats at the Beach, Bats at the Ballgame and others) bring us More (Houghton Mifflin $16.99). This picture book is the deftly-told story of a mouse who helps an eager magpie collect things until "more" is too much. With Brian Lies illustrating, you know it'll be gorgeous. For ages 4-8.
