Chabad of Cary, which offers that Mommy and Me with a Jewish Twist program I wrote about earlier, is planning a special Mexican-themed Purim celebration with plenty for kids to do.

The Mexican Purim Fiesta is at 11 a.m. March 20 at 909 Reedy Creek Rd. in Cary and includes food, music and lots of activities for the kids.

Purim commemorates the escape of the Jewish people from annihilation by the ancient Persian Empire, and is celebrated by the exchange of food packages between friends, giving charity to the poor, eating a traditional festive meal, and the reading of the Megillah, the scroll containing the Biblical narrative of the Book of Esther.

The event begins with the reading of the Megillah at 11 a.m. followed by a Kosher Mexican buffet lunch, live music, dancing to Purim music, crafts for kids, a Purim pinata and a special juggling performance. Tickets are $10. Children 12 and under are admitted free.
