Public works operations center to be built in north Raleigh
The City Council voted Tuesday to move forward with plans to build a public works operations center on city-owned land in north Raleigh.
Posted — UpdatedThe remote operations center, which would house street maintenance, vehicle fleet maintenance and other city divisions, would be between Capital Boulevard and Brentwood Road, just north of Interstate 440.
The council asked City Manager Russell Allen to negotiate contracts with architects and a construction manager so design work could begin and the necessary permits obtained.
Last month, the council voted to move forward with a public safety center in the same area. That facility would house an upgraded 911 center, a technology data center and an operational field office or district substation for the Raleigh Police Department.
Three years ago, plans for a $205 million public safety center downtown, which would have housed the 911 center and emergency operations, were shelved because the council couldn't agree on how to pay for it.
