Proposed park in Apex raises safety concerns for neighbors
Officials in Apex hope to turn 92 acres of land near the intersection of Interstate 540 and Old U.S. Highway 1 into Pleasant Park, but neighbors say they are worried about safety.
Posted — UpdatedAccording to a preliminary concept by the Town of Apex, the park would be home to multiple baseball and softball fields, multi-use fields, tennis courts and trails.
Marylou Harris has lived on Pleasant Plains Road for about 30 years. She said the new park would be in her front yard, but it's not the park that has her worried.
"The access to the park is dangerous," she said.
Right now, there is only one way in and out, and the road travels over railroad tracks.
"Suppose you have a soccer tournament, a thousand cars, you could not evacuate the place fast enough," Harris said.
Harris is not the only neighbor concerned about the plans.
"I'm concerned for safety...not only myself, but the people coming back and forth with the train," said Kristy Nice, who lives nearby.
Town officials said the planning for Pleasant Park is in the early stages, and that access concerns will be addressed with the railroad and the North Carolina Department of Transportation.
The Apex Town Council is scheduled to discuss the park's proposal at a meeting Tuesday night.
Several residents told WRAL News that they plan to be in attendance.
