Property tax rate, fees increase in approved Cary budget
The property tax rate for Cary homeowners will increase 2 cents to 37 cents per $100 valuation in the town's $295 million 2015-16 budget approved Thursday night, but town officials say the rate remains Wake County's lowest.

Solid waste fees will increase $1 per month, transportation development fees will increase by an average of 10 percent and water and sewer rates will increase by 3.8 percent – or about $2.75 more for residents using 5,000 gallons of water, under the budget.
The budget also funds 25.5 new positions, including:
- Animal control officer.
- Police officer.
- Three firefighters.
- A position overseeing the town’s open data program.
- Several customer service representatives in Public Works and Development Services.
- A position in Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources to help improve coordination of the department’s administrative functions and develop a more strategic approach to programs.
“The adopted budget continues our efforts of working hard to address the community’s needs and desires while maintaining a conservative approach to spending and saving,” Cary Town Manager Ben Shivar said in a statement. “I feel good about what the Town will be able to accomplish with this budget and am confident that the citizens of Cary will continue to enjoy living in one of the safest, strongest and most vibrant places in the nation.”
