Project Enlightenment plans parent workshops

The early childhood education and intervention program in Wake County sets its schedule for workshops for parents this fall.

Project Enlightenment, the center for early childhood education and intervention in Wake County, is an excellent resource for parents of babies to kindergartners.

The center near downtown Raleigh has a library and resource center where the public can check out books and make educational activities for kids. There are counseling services, a screening program for three- and four-year-olds and regular workshops.

The center has recently released its workshop schedule for the current school year. Here's what's on it for the fall, with descriptions from Project Enlightenment:

Positive Discipline: Limit Setting and Firmness, 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., Oct. 16, Oct. 23 and Oct. 30. For parents of kids ages 3 to 6. Tired of tantrums? Weary of whining? Kids not listening? In this three-session workshop series on the foundations of positive discipline, parents will learn how to develop a firm, effective limit setting style, follow through with choices and consequences and prevent misbehavior before it starts. Cost: $52 per person, $72 per couple.
Creating Calmness During Crazy Times, 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., Nov. 1 and Nov. 8. For families with children ages 2 to 6. What kind of relationship do you want with your child? Do you believe you can create it? What gets in the way? Come to this innovative two-session workshop series based on the lifework of Dr. Becky Bailey, educator and creator of the highly acclaimed research curriculum, “Conscious Discipline.” Cost: $30 per person and $45 per couple.
Toddler Issues, 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., Nov. 13. For families with children 15 months to 3 years. Learn what makes toddlers tick. Cost: $15 per person, $22 per couple
The Spirited Child, 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., Nov. 29. Is your child spirited? Is he or she often called “difficult” or “strongwilled?” Is he or she challenging, energetic, and persistent? Perhaps your child is a “spirited child.” This workshop discussion will focus on the characteristics of “spirited children” and better

ways to respond to their needs. Cost: $15 per person, $22 per couple.
