ERWIN, N.C. — A preliminary investigation into the death of a baby found buried in an Erwin back yard has determined the child died of blunt force trauma to the head, according to Erwin Police Chief Jonathan Johnson.

The parents, Dustin VanDyke, 28, and Gracie Riddle, 18, face charges of first-degree murder in the child's death. The couple, who are cousins, shared the home on Moulton Spring Road where the baby was found.

Johnson said it appears the child was alive at birth and that the death was a homicide.

The gender and age of the child have not been disclosed. An autopsy will confirm the official cause of death.
