Power outage closes three Cumberland schools
About 3,000 people in the Gray's Creek and Hope Mills areas of Cumberland County were without power Thursday morning following a wreck, authorities said.
Posted — UpdatedA vehicle knocked out a utility pole on Chickenfoot Road at about 5:30 a.m., taking a transformer offline, authorities said. South River Electric Membership Corp. customers in the area were affected.
Utility officials said they expect to have all power restored by early afternoon.
Gray's Creek High School and Gray's Creek Middle School dismissed students at 11:30 a.m. because of the difficulty in keeping students and faculty cool, and Gallberry Elementary School dismissed at noon, authorities said.
Buses serve all three schools, so Cumberland County Schools officials said routes might run up to 45 minutes late.
The driver of the vehicle that hit the utility pole was treated at a nearby hospital and released.
