Potential DOD policy would allow personal firearms on Ft. Bragg, military bases

The United States Department of Defense is considering a change to rules on military bases that would allow service members to bring personal weapons on the properties.

In the past, service members have not been allowed to carry personal weapons on military properties. But a new document, titled Army and the Use of Force, explains the possible firearm policy.

The policy has been debated in recent years following several deadly shootings that have taken place on military bases. Under the new directive, a commander would need to approve the carrying of weapons.

Several factors would be considered before a service member would be allowed to carry a weapon, including response times of local law enforcement and a person's training and qualifications.

Also, if granted the ability to carry a firearm, the person can can only do so for a maximum of 90 days. Authorization to carry a personal firearm must be renewed after that period.
