RALEIGH, N.C. — A Pope Field airman will receive a second Silver Star for gallantry in action.

Master Sgt. Thomas Case will receive the honor, the third highest military combat decoration, for actions during combat operations in Afghanistan in 2009.

Case is one of the highest decorated members of the military since Sept. 11, 2001 and only the third Air Force member to earn two Silver Stars, the military said. He is also the first Tactical Air Control Party airman to earn the Silver Star while assigned to Air Force Special Operations Command.

Case will receive his medal during a ceremony at Pope Field on Nov. 13.
