Pope airman killed in Sanford wreck

An airman assigned to the 43rd Logistics Readiness Squadron at Fort Bragg's Pope Airfield died Monday following a single-vehicle wreck on N.C. Highway 24/27 near Sanford, officials announced Thursday.

An airman assigned to the 43rd Logistics Readiness Squadron at Fort Bragg's Pope Airfield died Monday following a single-vehicle wreck on N.C. Highway 24/27 near Sanford, officials announced Thursday.

Airman 1st Class Christopher D. Griffin, of Starr, S.C., died after being taken by first responders to the UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill.

An investigation of the wreck is ongoing.

Griffin was a fuels distribution operator, officials said.

“Christopher was a proud and dedicated member of the 43rd Logistics Readiness Squadron Cobras,” Maj. Peyton Smith, 43rd Logistics Readiness Squadron commander, said in a statement.

“He was ambitious, energized and driven, setting the example for others to follow. We are deeply saddened by this tragic loss and our thoughts and prayers are with his family.”
