Police: Robbers pistol-whipped store clerk

Police are investigating a Monday night robbery in which two gunmen fired several shots and beat a store clerk with a handgun.

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. — Rocky Mount police are investigating a Monday night robbery in which two gunmen fired several shots and beat a store clerk with a handgun.

Two masked gunmen entered the City Dollar store at 1428 S. Church St. at about 9:45 p.m. and demanded money from the register, police said. One fired three shots in the store as they cleared out the register, police said.

The robbers forced one of two clerks in the store to open the store's safe, and one of them struck the clerk several times on the head with the butt of a handgun, police said.

The robbers fled with an undisclosed amount of money and cigarettes from the store, as well as a clerk's wallet, car keys, store keys and a diamond ring, police said. One of the two employees told police the robbers drove off in a dark-colored sedan.

One robber is described as a black man, about 5 feet, 8 inches tall and 170 pounds. He was wearing a black hat, black shirt, black pants, a mask and gloves and was carrying a .380-caliber handgun. The other robber was described as a black man, about 6 feet tall and 300 pounds. He was wearing a blue toboggan, black shirt, black pants, a mask and gloves.

The clerk who was beaten was taken to Nash General Hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.
