PINEHURST, N.C. — A 36-year-old Moore County man fired multiple gunshots in his home Friday night before engaging in a nearly three-hour standoff with authorities, Pinehurst police said.

According to investigators, Jeffrey Hiatt McMurty, of 2125 Longleag Drive West, Pinehurst, was playing cards with a small group of people at the home at about 10 p.m. when he began firing a pistol. No one inside at the time was injured.

When authorities arrived, McMurty barricaded himself in a bedroom of the home. At about 12:45 a.m. Saturday, members of the Pinehurst Police Department and Moore County Sheriff's Office used a battering ram to force the door of the room open.

McMurty was taken into custody without incident, police said. He was charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, two counts of assault by pointing a gun, discharge of a weapon into occupied property and injury to real property.

McMurty was being held in the Moore County jail Saturday under a $40,000 secured bond.
