CARY, N.C. — Police quickly took a man into custody who reportedly fired shots Thursday night outside UNC Wellness Center in Cary.

Anton Bezak Jr., 55, of 6531 Harper House Road in Newton Grove, was charged with discharging a weapon into occupied property and going armed to the terror of the people.

A Cary police spokesman said about 100 people were believed to be inside the center, at 350 Stonecroft Lane, when the call came in about 6:30 p.m.

A man called police from the center's front desk to report that the suspect was in the parking lot with a long gun over his shoulder and had knocked on windows in an attempt to get in.

Emergency dispatchers stayed on the phone with the employee for almost an hour as police surrounded the building.

The center was locked down while law enforcement investigated, but people were allowed to leave by 9 p.m.

No one was hit by gunfire, and no one was injured, Cary spokeswoman Susan Moran said.

Officers used a stun gun to subdue Bezak. Police said he is not an employee of UNC Wellness, but they did not offer details about how he might be connected to the center.
