Classes continue at Broughton High School after gunshots prompt lockdown

Around 7 a.m., officers with the Raleigh Police Department responded to reports of a fight involving gunshots near the 800 block of West Peace Street.

The incident, which occurred around the corner from Broughton High School on Saint Marys Street, prompted officials to put the high school on lockdown around 7:30 a.m.

Students are able to move freely in the halls, authorities said, but they are not allowed to leave the school. Officials said arrangements are being made for students to eat lunch on campus.

"Please know that all students are safe," read an alert the high school sent out to parents and guardians. "In a community lockdown, all exterior doors of the school are locked, and no one is allowed to enter or exit the building until an all-clear announcement is received from police. The school operates as usual with the exception of no outside activities."

Officials say one person was taken to the hospital following the fight with non-life-threatening injuries. Police said there is not an ongoing concern for public safety in the area.

Parents are not permitted on campus and will not be allowed to check students out until police give the school the "all clear" and the lockdown is lifted.
