Police link inmate to 2007 shooting death of Raleigh man

Montez Antonio Stevons, 24, who is serving more than nine years at Marion Correctional Institution, was indicted on murder and armed robbery charges Tuesday in the Dec. 12, 2007, death of Albert Louis Imes.

Investigators said that they don't believe the crime was random.

Court records show that Stevons has a lengthy criminal record and was a suspect in two Durham shootings within two months of Imes' death. It's not clear, however, if he was ever charged in those cases.

Stevons was charged in the fatal shooting of Eva Jacobs during a break-in at her Orange County home on Nov. 26, 2007.

Investigators said Jacobs was killed after she called 911 to report a break-in at her home. Prosecutors said a shotgun and $300 worth of marijuana were taken.

During the investigation into Imes' death, his wife and son were charged with possession of marijuana with intent to sell and deliver and maintaining a dwelling for the purposes of distributing controlled substances.

Police said the drug charges arose during the murder probe but that they were not related to Imes' death.
