Police identify victim, suspect in Millbrook Road shooting

The shootings, which also injured one of the officers, happened hours apart and about five miles away from each other.

Police said Saturday that Jay Gould Simmons, 53, was shot to death while he sat in his pickup truck outside the Carquest store at 2635 E. Millbrook Road.

Officers rushed to the store after receiving an emergency call about 2 p.m. to find Simmons slumped over the wheel of his truck. The area was cordoned off with crime-scene tape as detectives gathered evidence and talked to potential witnesses.

About six hours later, at 8:21 p.m., officers were dispatched to a shopping center at 5633 Creedmoor Road. Shortly after the first officers arrived, they reported hearing a gunshot and seeing a flash in the back lot of the shopping center.

More units arrived as officers determined the man they were targeting could be the suspect wanted in the earlier homicide.

For nearly an hour, residents and shopkeepers were asked to stay inside and lock their doors. One resident told WRAL News he heard a single shot and saw the build up of force as armed officers converged on the scene.

The standoff ended, police said, when the suspect approached two officers and fired a shotgun. Officer M.M. Harmon was struck in the arm. He and fellow officer D.B. Moreland returned fire, and a bullet hit the suspect in the torso.

The suspect has been identified as Matthew Durwood Calton, 53. Police said Calton and Simmons knew each other.

Calton and Harmon were transported to WakeMed with non-life-threatening injuries. Calton was listed in fair condition Saturday morning. Harmon was listed in good condition.

Police said they have obtained a warrant charging Calton with murder, and additional charges are pending. Calton will be processed when he is released from the hospital.

Following departmental policy, the State Bureau of Investigation is investigating the officer-involved shooting and will report its findings to the Wake County District Attorney. Raleigh police said its Internal Affairs unit is also conducting an investigation.

Under the policy, the two officers have been reassigned to administrative duty until the investigation is completed. Police said Harmon has been with the force since January 2005, and Moreland joined in January 2012. Both are assigned to the Field Operations Division.
