Police interest group endorses Raleigh's interim police chief

"Interim Chief (Cassandra) Deck-Brown exhibits the characteristics that are essential in the next police chief: experience, knowledge, expertise and integrity," RPPA President Eric DeSimone said in a statement Tuesday. "We are confident that Chief Deck-Brown will continue to lead this department and the community forward."

Deck-Brown is one of three candidates that the city is considering to replace Dolan.

Earlier this month, she announced the discontinuation of an employee performance evaluation that Dolan implemented last year. The RPPA opposed the system as a way to measure police officers' work, saying it judged officers on the quantity of the work they do and not the quality.

Deck-Brown said in a statement that she thought the program did not meet the police department's needs.

Last week, Raleigh city leaders held a public forum with the three police chief finalists. In addition to Deck-Brown, they are Chief Bryan Norwood, of the Richmond Police Department in Richmond, Va., and Deputy Chief Malik Aziz, of the Dallas Police Department in Dallas, Texas.

City Manager Russell Allen said Tuesday that a decision on who will fill the post could be possible within the next two weeks.
