ERWIN, N.C. — Erwin police said they are searching for a 14-year-old girl and 15-year-old boy who stole a car and ran away together Thursday afternoon, possibly to New York or Florida, "to start a new life."

Heidi Kaitlin Vandyke and Logan Ray Barefoot, who are not licensed to drive, stole a dark blue 1999 Buick Century from Logan's grandmother, with North Carolina tag SPT-1929, according to police. The car has a broken windshield, and the back driver's side door has paint-spattered tape holding up the glass.

The couple is also accused of stealing a credit card from Kaitlin's mother and taking $800 out of the bank account. Police said they believe the teens have either discarded or turned off their cellphones.

Anyone with any information on their whereabouts is asked to call Erwin police at 910-897-5122, Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. During other hours, call the Harnett County Sheriff's Office at 910-893-9111.
