SOUTHERN PINES, N.C. — Southern Pines police on Monday arrested a 21-year-old shooting suspect who walked away from UNC Hospitals Saturday morning.

Larry Alexander Leverette is charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, felony possession of cocaine and felony probation violation.

Police say Leverette was wanted on outstanding arrest warrants from another county when he was injured in a shootout with another man Friday afternoon outside Brookside Park Apartments on Richards Street.

Police pointed fingers at the hospital Monday for not keeping Leverette there after being told about the outstanding warrants against him.

At the time, however, Leverette had not been charged in the shooting and was considered the victim.

The hospital said the warrants were never verified, which is the procedure that allows UNC Hospitals Police to watch a patient and keep him from leaving. They added that Leverette was never under arrest when he was at the hospital and that police never asked for him to be detained.

Leverette was shot three times in the torso and once in his left bicep, and the hospital said he left "before being officially discharged from treatment and against medical advice."

Leverette was in the Moore County jail Tuesday under a $1,050,000 secured bond.
