Police: 8-month-old beaten by parents had fractured skull, broken ribs

Raleigh police arrested a 29-year-old man Wednesday and charged him with child abuse, alleging that he seriously injured his 8-month-old child.

RALEIGH, N.C. — Raleigh police arrested a man Wednesday and charged him with child abuse, alleging that he seriously injured his 8-month-old child on Oct. 29.

Devon Mayshawn Shields, 29, of 1617B Burgundy St., faces one count of intentional child abuse causing serious bodily injury. He was in the Wake County jail Thursday under a $250,000 bond.

According to an arrest warrant, the 8-month-old had two skull fractures, leg fractures, four broken ribs, stomach perforation, a bruised liver and spleen and a lacerated pancreas.

The child's mother, Trista Denise Miles, 22, was arrested and charged in the incident Nov. 10. She was in the Wake County jail Thursday under a $200,000 bond.

Raleigh police spokesman Jim Sughrue said Thursday that the child's injuries were life-threatening and that the child was being treated at WakeMed.
