My daughters and I were running a little early on a recent trip to the Museum of Life and Science in Durham so we finally stopped at the playground that we've driven by for the last many years.

Rock Quarry Park at Edison Johnson Recreation and Aquatics Center (which I always thought was just called Edison Johnson Park) sits within walking distance of the massive museum on Murray Avenue. It's easy to understand why so many drive by this spot on our way to see bears and lemurs and dinosaurs and butterflies ... and everything else it offers.

But, this is a fun destination on its own. The recreation center includes an indoor pool along with a wide variety of park classes and programs for all ages.

I'll focus on the playground. It's a pretty traditional spot with your usual slides, monkey bars and belt swings. There's a large sand area here. There are some picnic tables and benches around the border. There's not a lot of shade.

The main feature here is the sprayground, which shoots and sprays water on you from above and below. The seasonal sprayground is open now from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.

For a closer look, watch the video.

Find Rock Quarry Park at Edison Johnson Recreation Center at 500 W. Murray Ave., Durham. There are bathrooms inside the recreation center and plenty of parking.
