Playground Review: Powell Drive Park

The small neighborhood park, with about 9 acres, sits at 740 Powell Dr., about half a mile from Western Boulevard. The park features some fields, tennis and basketball courts, picnic shelters, a pond and an unstaffed building that's available for rentals or special classes.

But a new focus is the playground, which was built as part of a community effort by the sorority.

You'll find some traditional belt and bucket swings, along with a large swing that several kids can fit on. You'll also find newer play pieces that focus on movement, creative play and allowing kids to build their upper body strength through climbing and moving.

The sweet play piece for kids ages 2 to 5, which looks like something Dr. Seuss might have drawn, features a small water or sand table, slide, tunnel, climbers and pieces they can move and bang.

For kids ages 5 to 12, there's a large rope climbing piece, along with other climbers, spinners and a traditional slide.

The playground sits on rubber safety surfacing. One downside ... there are no public bathrooms. (The building does have bathrooms that are open for those renting or taking part in a program there).
