ERWIN, N.C. — A plane crashed in the tree line near the Harnett Regional Jetport, the Harnett County Sheriff's Office said.

The 71-year-old pilot, who did not want to give his name, said he lost engine power shortly after takeoff from a private, grass-covered landing strip on U.S. Highway 421 about three miles east of the jetport. He flew towards the tree line to avoid hitting any homes, said the pilot, who added that he crashed approximately 300 feet east of the runway.

The pilot, who was flying an ultralight aircraft, was shaken but uninjured, he said.

No further information was immediately available.
