Pittsboro shooting suspect arrested after standoff

Shontay Lavar Cotton, of 88 Lindsey St., was charged with felonious assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill and misdemeanor assault by pointing a gun.

PITTSBORO, N.C. — Chatham County sheriff’s deputies arrested a man Wednesday afternoon after a brief standoff in downtown Pittsboro.

Shontay Lavar Cotton, of 88 Lindsey St., was charged with felonious assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill and misdemeanor assault by pointing a gun.

Law enforcement officers tracked Cotton to his home after a report of a shooting in front of 3260 Old Graham Road. They said Cotton was involved in an altercation there with an acquaintance.

There were minor injuries due to a physical assault, but no one was shot.

Cotton was taken into custody just after 6 p.m. The incident remains under investigation.

Cotton was being held at the Chatham County Sheriff's Office on Wednesday evening.
