Person County rescue dog set to become Hawaii lifesaver
Months after being surrendered by her owner to the Person County Animal Shelter, a bloodhound with lots of energy will soon be headed to Hawaii to begin her new life as a search-and-rescue animal.

Shelter manager Kelli Oakley said it was quickly apparent that Reba wasn't the type of dog that would enjoy a laid back home life. She needed something to do, and Oakley soon contacted Haw River nonprofit Public Safety Dogs Inc. to see if Reba might be a candidate to become a service dog.
The nonprofit trains shelter dogs to become search-and-rescue animals and then donates them to law enforcement agencies. Public Safety Dogs officials visited Reba in the shelter and soon took her to Haw River for training.
Reba completed her training this spring and is now waiting to fly west, where she will serve as a search-and-rescue dog for a police department in Hawaii.
