LOUISBURG, N.C. — A recent report from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services shows several "failings" in the treatment of a patient last December at Franklin Regional Medical Center.

That patient later died, prompting the federal agency to investigate Franklin County's only hospital.

Last month, CMS S accepted a corrective plan of action from the hospital, which kept it from losing its eligibility to participate in the Medicare and Medicaid programs.

There were several problems with its governance, medical staff, nursing services and laboratory services.

Beyond those general areas of concern, neither the CMS nor Franklin Regional will say what the problems were.

In a joint statement released Wednesday, Franklin Regional Chief Executive Officer Mike McNair and Chief of Staff J. Gabriel Martinez said the hospital is "committed to building a healthy future with the residents of Franklin County."

"As a result of the CMS report, we have taken several steps, including staff and physician education, process redesign and revisions to policies and procedures," the statement said.
