Passengers rescued after ferry runs aground off Hatteras
State transportation officials say 23 passengers were taken off a ferry after it ran aground off Hatteras Island.

The Ferry Division of the North Carolina Department of Transportation said ferry crews and U.S. Coast Guard personnel helped remove the passengers from the Roanoke on Monday. The passengers were placed on a Coast Guard response boat, which then took them to the ferry terminal at Hatteras.
Crews had planned to use the tug Albemarle to free the Roanoke from the shoal, but the ferry freed itself after several hours and headed to the Hatteras terminal to unload vehicles and be inspected for any damage.
The Roanoke ran aground at approximately 11:30 a.m. Monday on its way into Hatteras from Ocracoke's South Dock terminal.
