Park Review: Isabella Cannon Park

The park at 2601 Kilgore Ave. saw a major overhaul in 2011. It's named after Raleigh's first female mayor, who died at the age of 97 in 2002. Cannon was a big advocate for her University Park neighborhood where the park is located.

At the park, you'll find a standalone slide; bucket and belt swings; a couple of bouncy rides and a small sand area. Next to the playground is a basketball court. Follow the sidewalk from the playground and you'll get to what is Raleigh first playground boulder. Designed for ages 10 and up, the boulder offers a variety of difficulty levels.

Here's what I like about this park: There are a couple of nice open space areas where kids can run around or you can lay out a blanket and a picnic. Tall trees help to shade the small playground. And the park offers a nice variety of play experiences - the playground for younger kids and the basketball court and boulder for older kids.

It's a park where I can take both my four-year-old and my eight-year-old, who loves a good playground but isn't crazy about running around with a bunch of little kids under foot, and know they'll have something to do.

Parking is on the street. And there are no restrooms here. But ... Cameron Village isn't too far away.
