Paperhand Puppet Intervention opens its 17th annual summer show this Friday with a new production called "The Beautiful Beast."

The acclaimed group is known for its amazing puppets of all kinds - from enormous puppets to masks, stilt puppets, multi-person marionettes and "cardboard trickery." Stories are told through a mix of original live music, puppets and performers.

This year's show "takes a look at the monsters and beasts that inhabit our dreams and folktales by peering through different lenses to explore the beauty, monstrousness and magic of these creatures," according to the show's Facebook event listing.

Paperhand will bring the show to several locations starting Friday.

It runs Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays starting this Friday, Aug. 5, through Sept. 4 (and Sept 5, which is Labor Day), at the Forest Theatre in Chapel Hill. The schedule includes mostly evening shows, but there are some Sunday matinees. (Tip: The Saturday shows usually sell out).

The show moves to the N.C. Museum of Art in Raleigh from Sept. 9 to Sept. 11 as part of the museum's summer concert series. Tickets are available on the museum's website. Tickets to the show at the art museum are $17; $8.50 for kids ages 7 to 18; and free for kids 6 and under.

From there, it travels to the Carolina Theatre of Greensboro from Sept. 17 to Sept. 18.

Paperhand has a really thorough page on its website with all kinds of answers to frequently asked questions about the show, a favorite for families for years.
