CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — A Chapel Hill man stole an Orange County ambulance and crashed it into several vehicles Friday morning before he was apprehended, police said.

Paramedics responded to a medical assistance call on Deerwood Court and were treating a man when he ran from the house and commandeered their ambulance, police said. He drove the ambulance around the neighborhood, striking parked vehicles Longleaf Drive, Willow Drive and Emory Drive.

Police said the ambulance also hit a Chapel Hill fire truck.

The unidentified man finally crashed the ambulance at the dead end of Emory Drive and was detained by Chapel Hill police. He was taken to UNC Hospitals for a medical evaluation and treatment of minor injuries, police said.

Charges are pending in the case, police said.
