CLAYTON, N.C. — One woman was killed Sunday afternoon in a three-vehicle crash on N.C. Highway 42 near Interstate 40 in Clayton, authorities said.

Robert Dees of Apex was speeding as he tried to merge his Ford F-150 pickup into a line of eastbound traffic as the highway went from four lanes down to two, authorities said. He lost control of the truck, which ended up sideways in the westbound lane, where it was struck by a Hyundai SUV driven by Stefanie McCartney, 34, of Clayton.

McCartney died in the crash. Her daughter, 12-year-old Emaleigh McCartney, suffered severe injuries, but authorities said they don't appear to be life-threatening.

A utility trailer Dees was pulling detached from the pickup, and an eastbound Chevrolet Tahoe struck it, authorities said. Five people were in the Tahoe, but none was injured.

Dees, who suffered severe, but not-life-threatening injuries, was charged with misdemeanor death by vehicle and careless and reckless driving, authorities said.
