Neighbors fear for safety after Durham home invasion

Police said the victim, whose name was not released, was shot in the side and is expected to survive.

The shooting happened shortly before 11:30 p.m. at 707 Carter Ave. Neighbors said that the victim had just come home from work to find his mother inside of their house with someone who was trying to rob them.

One neighbor, who asked to remain anonymous, said that the man was crying out for help after he was shot. Her family went over to see what they could do and called 911.

"I know that my mom and her friend went to help our neighbor," she said. "He was yelling for help and our house did get hit."

She says that the community is a "nice, quiet neighborhood" and doesn't deserve a bad rap.

Neighbors say that this is the second shooting on Carter Avenue in two months. Some are scared for their safety, but don't know what to do.

Gwendolyn Hunt, who lives next door to the home that was invaded, doesn't sleep at night anymore.

"I sleep during the daytime," Hunt said. "I'm scared. I'm totally scared. I talked to the lady whose son was shot last night. She said 'Ms. Gwen, we work hard to get our house. Why should we have to move.' That's true because I don't have nowhere to go."

Hunt's home is peppered with bullet holes and the front window is still shattered from a shooting that occurred on the night of July 9. She says she was inside the home at the time and could have easily been killed.

"They said they picked up 27 bullet casings," Hunt said of the July incident.

Her fear from that shooting still keeps her awake at night, so she was up late Sunday night when police once again showed up on her street.

"My neighbors called me and said 'Ms. Gwen, are you ok'," Hunt said.

Police do not have a suspect in the incident.
