SNOW HILL, N.C. — An off-duty police officer told investigators that he shot and killed a man who broke into the home of the man's ex-girlfriend Wednesday night.

Investigators said that Michael Honey, 32, entered his ex-girlfriend's house at 1300 S.E. 2nd St. in Snow Hill around 11:30 p.m. Stantonsburg police Officer Rodney Williams, who was inside the house, shot and killed Honey.

Investigators with the Greene County Sheriff's Office said Williams told them Honey was breaking into the house. Williams used his service revolver in the shooting, deputies said.

The State Bureau of Investigation has been called to probe the shooting, standard procedure whenever a law-enforcement officer is involved in a shooting.

Williams has been placed on paid administrative leave, pending the results of the investigation.
