No courtroom support for Raleigh teen who crashed mother's car
One day after leading police on a chase through city streets during the morning rush hour and crashing her mother's car, a Raleigh teen was in court Tuesday to face a judge.
Posted — UpdatedNobody was in the courtroom for Alexis Lewis, 17, which is unusual in a case with a young defendant. One of the stipulations of Lewis’ bond was that she only be released to her mother, Jennifer Lee, but Lee was not present Tuesday afternoon.
According to court papers, Lewis stole her mother’s 2003 black Lexus on Monday and was driving the wrong way on Interstate 540.
A Highway Patrol officer tried to stop Lewis, who stopped briefly before taking off again. The officer then chased her off I-540 onto Six Forks Road. Lewis eventually crashed the car at Shellburne Drive and Lynn Road, and rolled down an embankment onto a driveway.
Lewis faces nine charges, including trying to assault an officer by backing into his police car.
Lewis’ public defender asked for a reduction in her $85,000 bond Tuesday, but the judge denied the request. She is due in court again later this month on unrelated charges.
Lewis has been arrested five times in Wake County this year. She was convicted in June of possessing stolen goods and was sentenced to probation.
