No charges filed against Fayetteville officers who shot triple-murder suspect
No charges will be filed against two Fayetteville police officers who shot and wounded a man suspected of killing three people in November.
Posted — UpdatedSgt. Steven Bates and Officer Travis Smith were involved in the Nov. 26 shooting of Shawn Lee Legrand, who is charged with three counts of first-degree murder in the deaths of Ardell Paige Jr., Krystle Price Papile and Gregory Steven Fitzgerald.
Police initially thought the attack started as a break-in but said later Legrand went to the home to confront someone and then shot or stabbed the others.
Paige was shot, and Papile was stabbed multiple times. Fitzgerald, who was stabbed, was alive when police arrived but died later at a hospital.
LeGrand, 44, also faces two counts of attempted first-degree murder and four counts of first-degree kidnapping.
Legrand was released from prison in July after being incarcerated for over 23 years, according to state Department of Correction records.
He was convicted of assault inflicting serious injury, common-law robbery, burglary, breaking and entering and larceny for 1987 crimes. His sentence was lengthened after he was convicted of assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury for an offense committed while imprisoned.
