RALEIGH, N.C. — An urgent care clinic franchise is offering free flu shots for school-age children and college students at its nine locations in North Carolina.

Officials with Urgent Cares of America say all children age 4 and up and college students with their college IDs can walk into the clinic and get the shot as long as supplies last.

This year's flu shot protects against three different strains of the virus.

The free shots are available at Asheville Urgent Care, Boone Urgent Care, Hendersonville Urgent Care, Clayton Urgent Care, FastMed of Cary, FastMed of Wake Forest, Fuquay Urgent Care, Urgent Care of Cary and Wake Urgent Care.

More than 5 percent of emergency room visits in the last week were flu-related, double the number of such visits in the fall, health officials said.

Traditionally, January marks the start of the peak flu season. The U.S. Department if Health and Human Services recommends that individuals get a flu shot as soon as possible.
