FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — Authorities say a Fayetteville man has been charged with driving while impaired after slamming into a police car on Morganton and Westlake roads, then running away.

Police said Jeffrey Kelley, 37, turned into the cruiser early Friday morning, hitting the police car on the driver's side and sending it into a retaining wall.

Police say Kelley then got out of his wrecked car and ran. He was arrested at his home about an hour after the wreck, investigators said.

Authorities say Kelley's blood alcohol level was 0.14 percent, well over the 0.08 percent level where a person is considered legally drunk.

Kelley was charged with DWI, felony hit and run, driving while license revoked and a red light violation.

Officer Angela Vazquez, 34, was driving the police car, investigators said.  Paramedics transported her to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center where she was treated and released for non-life-threatening injuries.
