COROLLA, N.C. — Local rescuers continued searching Saturday for a 12-year-old boy who disappeared in rough surf along the Outer Banks caused by what was then Tropical Storm Danny.

Officials said the boy disappeared while body-boarding off Corolla Friday morning. His mother reported seeing him go underwater and the board washing ashore without him.

The Coast Guard called off its search at dusk Friday. Local crews continued to search by water and land a day later, said Randall Edwards, a spokesman for the Currituck Sheriff's Office.

Petty Officer Andrew Kendrick said the Coast Guard would go back out if they get additional information.

Authorities say the waves weren't that high, only about 4 to 6 feet tall, when the boy was pulled under. However, the storm was creating a very strong undertow that can pull swimmers to the bottom.
