Coast Guard rescues family from sinking boat off N.C.
The Coast Guard rescued a family of four, including a 9-year-old boy, clinging to the side of a capsized boat near Bogue Inlet, off Emerald Isle, Sunday afternoon.
Posted — UpdatedThe father radioed for help around 3 p.m. and said that his boat was taking on water with his family, including a 9-year-old boy, on board, the Coast Guard said.
Coast Guard personnel lost the signal of a second mayday call but calculated the boat's position using the two towers that received it. A 27-foot boat was sent from the Emerald Isle station and found the family at the capsized boat about 8½ miles from Bogue Inlet.
Three people were clinging to the sides of the capsized boat, and one was floating the water. The rescuers got everyone out of the water by about 4:15 p.m.
"Rescue 21 clarified any confusing of the location of the family clinging onto the capsized vessel due to lack of broadcast position, and it was good to see they all had their life jackets on," said Chief Petty Officer Marten Stel.
A towboat from Swansboro went out to salvage the capsized boat.
The Coast Guard didn't identify the boaters.
