RALEIGH, N.C. — The director of the state division that investigates patient safety at mental hospitals and other facilities will retire May 1.

Bob Fitzgerald with the Division of Health Service Regulation told other division directors within the Department of Health and Human Services late last week of his decision.

Another division director within the department - mental health treatment chief Mike Moseley - announced last month he was retiring.

Moseley's announcement came just before a series of stories in The News & Observer of Raleigh detailed how mental health reforms started in 2001 wasted money. The stories also highlighted the deaths of patients that Fitzgerald's agency investigated.

Fitzgerald has been in state government for 34 years.
